Woman Recovering After Being Struck By Stray Bullet While Riding COTA Bus

Police responded to a reported shooting scene in north Columbus near the Ohio State University campus Tuesday afternoon.  

Police told 10TV that the shooting originated at N. 4th Street and E. 8th Avenue. Passengers told 10TV the driver kept going after shots hit the bus, trying to get away from the gunfire.

The bus eventually stopped at N. 4th Street and E. 19th Avenue. Police said someone fired shots from the street, striking the bus several times.

A woman who was riding the bus was struck by a bullet that came through the window. Police said the woman, 39, was struck in the head. She was hospitalized in critical condition.

A witness said the bus was struck by three bullets.

Other people on the bus were injured because of flying glass.

Two passengers on the bus described a chaotic scene. One passenger told 10TV that he and another passenger applied pressure to the woman's wound until help arrived.

COTA released the following statement on Tuesday evening:

Our thoughts tonight are with this woman, her family, other affected passengers and employees. COTA's priority is, as always, the safety and security of our passengers and employees. We are confident that safety officials are securing the scene and investigating.
