Woman Dressed In Scrubs Pretends To Be Grant Medical Center Employee
A Columbus hospital is putting others on alert after someone impersonating a staff member was seen walking the halls near the newborns.
Grant Medical Center reported the problem not once, but twice this week.
"Clearly, this is the kind of thing that really makes your hair stand on edge,” said Harry Trombitas, Vice President of Security Operations for Ohio Health.
He says his staff was alerted shortly before noon Wednesday about a problem on the Labor and Delivery floor when someone spotted a suspicious woman dressed in scrubs.
"If you're wearing scrubs and a stethoscope and you don't have any business doing that, you're probably not up to any good,” Trombitas said.
He says they had a talk with the woman who at first claimed she was an employee before saying she was looking for a job.
They told her not to come back, but she did the very next day - this time on the 4th floor nursery ward.
"Officers were immediately dispatched to the area and escorted her out,” Trombitas said.
Staff security indicates that the suspect had more than just scrubs and a stethoscope. They say she was carrying a large bag and a baby bottle.
Trombitas says he does not know her motivation but has seen enough similar incidents to assume the worst.
"It does concern you that this person may have been looking for an infant,” he said.
10TV tried to speak with the woman but no one answered her door.
10TV is not naming her because she has not been officially charged with a crime.
However, Trombitas is making sure all hospitals in the area know who she is.
"Even though we might be competitors in one sense, we're all in this together and the last thing anybody would want to see is an infant taken,” he said.
Hospital officials say they stopped the woman well before any infants or mothers were put in danger.
They say they are pressing charges against the woman in order for police to arrest her for criminal trespassing if she returns.
