Woman Catches Package Thief In the Act
A Columbus resident is warning others after she says a thief tried to steal her holiday package delivery.
Kaydee Laney says it happened at her townhome just north of the OSU campus and that she caught him in the act.
She says around 12:30 p.m. Monday, she hear a knock at the door and saw the UPS delivery truck, but by the time she got to the door, a boy in his early teens was walking away with it.
"This kid just didn't to seem to have any qualms, he wasn't running away from my porch when I caught him he was walking slowly," said Laney.
She says when she told him she was going to call police, he turned around and put the package back on the porch and then walked away.
Laney says she's never seen him before but suspects this isn't his first attempt.
She says he may have even been watching for a delivery and is now concerned if and when there's a next time, she won't be so quick to catch him.
"It's just frustrating because I know I have three or four other packages and I can't bear to think that presents that I'm buying for my family and friends are going to be stolen by someone," she said.
Laney says she plans to file a police report and will notify the block watch captain.
She also hopes her neighbors are aware of how fast things can happen, and to be watchful of everyone.
"Very sad that a kid thought that that was the right thing to do," she said.
Columbus Police say reports of stolen packages always rise this time of year and that these are crimes of opportunity.
In this case, Laney was home and able to intercept the swipe, but many residents don't have that convenience so police say have a plan when expecting deliveries.
There are steps you can take to help protect your package, have it shipped to a location where you know someone will be available to receive it.
If that isn't an option, officials say you can often choose to have the package shipped directly to a FedEx or UPS store or the post office.
Also consider selecting a "signature required" option. That means the package will only be delivered if someone signs for it.
