A woman and her cat are safe after escaping their burning home.

It happened around 3 a.m. Tuesday on Roche Place near Sinclair Road in north Columbus.

The fire chief tells 10TV the woman heard crackling and popping.  She went to investigate and discovered her home was on fire.

The woman ran from the home and called for help.

Her cat was trapped in the home for some time, but eventually made it out safely.

Both the exterior and interior of the home suffered damage.

The house has no heat or electricity and has been deemed unlivable.

The Red Cross is helping the woman.

The fire chief believes the flames may have started in the basement, spreading upstairs and to a neighboring shed.  The exact cause of the fire has not been determined.
