Sheriff’s deputies say they believe someone shot out a window from a school bus carrying children in Delaware County.

Emergency crews were called to U.S. Route 23 and Walnut Boulevard around 8:40 a.m. on Thursday.

A representative from Olentangy Local schools says about thirty children were on the bus on their way to Arrowhead Elementary.

That is when detectives believe someone fired a BB gun at the back of the bus.

"This is crazy. People are just so lost, so messed up,” said Cotty Acosta, whose 5th grade son was on the bus.

Acosta says she ran to the scene when she heard the bus window had been shot out.

"Why would you shoot the bus? (They are) little kids. They haven't done nothing,” Acosta said.

Acosta says her son was one of two students to receive minor cuts in the incident.

“He got shot right here in his forehead,” she said. “Could you imagine if it would have been a very strong gun?"

School officials say both students were checked out by medics on scene and cleared to head to school.

The district says all students boarded another bus while detectives began their investigation.

"Once we determined there were no serious injuries and medics had been called, (we) transported them to another bus,” said Michael Straughter, communication director for Olentangy Local Schools. “We wanted to get them back on routine as quickly as possible - back to teaching and learning."

Olentangy Schools put a notice to parents on the district's website, alerting them to what happened.

The site does not specifically mention a BB gun because the Delaware County Sheriff's Office is still investigating what the suspect used to cause the damage.

"Even if it was confirmed a BB gun, we're still going to take it seriously,” said Tracy Whited, community relations officer for the Delaware County Sheriff. “We don't know the motivation, what's going through the mind of the suspect, so we take any incident seriously."

Acosta says she also wants to know what the suspect was thinking when he put her son in danger.

"It's pretty sad to know people are just actually doing that,” she said. “What was the purpose of shooting a bus?"

Detectives hope surveillance cameras on the bus may have caught a view of the suspect.

Students told detectives that they spotted a man who may have shot out the window.

He was described as being between 18 and 20 years old, having a ponytail and goatee. He was wearing a black hooded sweatshirt with a Chinese symbol on the front of it.
