Video Captures Woman Allegedly Stealing Stuffed Animal From Gravesite
Authorities in Richland County are trying to identify a woman in a video who took a stuffed animal from a child's gravesite.
Ontario police say they set up a camera in a tree after a family claimed items were being stolen from their child's gravesite on multiple occasions.
Hayden "Tank" Cole Sheridan passed away in 2007. Since then, toys and night lights had been disappearing from where he was buried.
“We expect to see our son’s stuff still here. So when people take it, it breaks our heart,” said Jaclyn Sheridan, Tank’s mother.
She says stuff has been disappearing from the cemetery for seven years.
“It’s a slap in the face. It’s gut wrenching,” she added.
Sheridan tells 10TV she gave birth to Hayden, his brother and his sister 16 weeks early. She says when he was 14 months old, he took a nap and never woke up.
Investigators say they were finally able to catch a suspect on camera, stealing a large stuffed animal. The toy was found Wednesday morning near the cemetery – four days after it disappeared.
Other items that have been taken over the years include solar lights and toy tanks.
“This should be the one place I should be able to come and show respect to my son and they've taken that,” added Sheridan.
Police are looking to identify the woman who was spotted at the Mansfield Memorial Park on April 19.
“We're hopeful that we can get this person identified,” said Det. Jon Sigler, Ontario Police Department.
Police also say whoever has been stealing from the cemetery will likely face petty theft charges.
