Two Men Confess to Multiple Armed Robberies
The Athens County Sheriff's Office said two men confessed Thursday to half a dozen armed robberies across Athens County.
Athens County Sheriff Pat Kelly said detectives with the sheriff's office and Athens Police Department arrested James Whiteman, 30, and James R. Geer, 26.
Detectives from both agencies executed three search warrants Thursday and collected evidence in the case.
Sheriff Kelly said Whiteman and Geer confessed to six armed robberies.
The men are suspected in armed robberies in Athens, Chauncey and Guysville. The alleged crimes date back to April.
Sheriff Kelly said video surveillance from an armed robbery on April 8 at the Guysville Marathon Convenience Store in Guysville showed Whiteman entering the store with a jacket over a weapon. Investigators said it was a bb rifle with a shotgun barrel.
Sheriff Kelly said the men confessed to detectives that they would enter a business and rob the cashier at gunpoint. One of the men would stand outside the business and pretend to text message to make sure it was clear to enter.
Whiteman and Geer are charged with aggravated robbery. More charges are expected.
The men were being held at the Southeast Ohio Regional Jail Thursday night.
