Law enforcement agencies are planning several sobriety checkpoints over St. Patrick's Day weekend.

Columbus police reported that they will conduct a checkpoint on Sawmill Road, south of Martin Road. It's scheduled for Friday night from 9 p.m. to 3 a.m. on Saturday morning.

The Franklin County DUI Task Force said it would operate a sobriety checkpoint in the Ohio State University campus area on Saturday. The exact location of that checkpoint will be announced at a later time.

Officers and deputies will be looking for impaired drivers in an effort to curb drunken driving over the weekend.

The Ohio State Highway Patrol said last St. Patrick's Day weekend, five out of the six traffic fatalities across the state were connected to drunk driving.

Advanced notification of the sobriety checkpoints serves as a deterrent, law enforcement officials say.
