Search Continues For Man Who Eluded Police During Two Officer-Involved Shootings
Police on Wednesday continued to search for a man who eluded officers twice during two separate police-involved shootings.
The chaos began Tuesday morning, when police responded to a burglary at the Brentwood Lake Apartments, located along the 7000 block of Brooke Boulevard, near Brice and Tussing roads.
At some point during the response, 21-year-old Destin Thomas was shot to death. Investigators said that it was not clear if he was struck by police gunfire or if someone else shot him.
Hours later, someone called law enforcement with information about a person matching the description of an individual involved in Tuesday morning's police-involved shooting.
A patrolling officer responded to the call Tuesday afternoon and saw two men, and one of the men ran away. The officer chased after the man who then stole the officer's cruiser.
The officer fired shots at the man. The man, whose identity was not immediately released, crashed the cruiser, and then took off again on foot. He was arrested along Bentley Station Place and taken to Grant Medical Center.
Police said that the search for another person in connection with the two shooting incidents would continue. Columbus police Sgt. Rich Weiner said that he hoped the man already in custody would be the key.
"We're hoping that the guy we have in custody will shed a little light onto exactly what happened. Was he a victim? Was he a suspect? Hopefully, he'll be able to tell investigators exactly what happened," Weiner said.
Weiner said that the man was in custody and was being treated for his injuries in connection with jumping off a second-story balcony. Police said that they were able to identify the man but were not immediately releasing his identity.
