Red Cross Helping Family Displaced By Christmas Day Fire
One person was hospitalized on Christmas Day after a duplex fire.
Four adults and three children were at a home, located in the 1100 block of Atcheson Street, when the home caught fire at about 10 a.m.
A man was taken to Ohio State University Hospital East after the fire.
Family members told 10TV News that they had just finished unwrapping Christmas presents when they smelled smoke and then spotted the fire in the ceiling.
Paul Gales said that his grandmother called to him to bring her some water but that it was no match for the spreading flames.
“The dark smoke is what made it kind of scary, because I couldn’t help my grandpa get out. I couldn’t make it up the steps to help him make it out. That was the scary part.”
Gales said that friends came to the rescue and helped his grandfather escape the flames.
“If not for my friends, he probably wouldn’t have made it downstairs,” Gales said. “He wouldn’t have made it.”
Keayuna Jenkins, Gales’ cousin, said that she was in the shower when she smelled the smoke and realized something was wrong.
“I’ve never been in a fire before, so I was just scared,” Jenkins said.
The cause of the fire was still under investigation.
