Powell Police Department Warns of Phone Scam

The Powell Police Department issued a warning Wednesday night about phone calls coming from a person claiming to be a court official.

According to police, the man accuses the person of missing jury duty with the Delaware County Common Pleas Court.

The caller then tells the person that he or she will have to pay $500 to $825 in fines within two to four hours of the call.

Police reports state that the caller also tells the person to stay on the phone because they have a warrant for their arrest and suspended their driver's license.

The Powell Police Department reminds residents that legitimate companies or agencies do not call or e-mail, asking for personal information like credit card or social security numbers.

Police urge residents to never give out that information.

Anyone with information on these phone calls is asked to call the Powell Police Department at (614) 885-3374.
