Powell Officials Approve Park Smoking Ban

There is now one less place smokers are allowed.

Powell city council members voted to put in place a soft smoke ban on smoking within 15 feet of Powell playgrounds, under picnic shelters and near park bathrooms, according to ThisWeek Community Newspapers.

No smoking signs soon will be installed n certain areas of Powell public parks.

According to city officials, the ban is designed to curb smoking near areas most frequented by children.

The ban is described as “soft,” because it will not be strictly enforced.

The mayor said that the legislation strikes a balance between personal freedom and public health.
