A driver had his sport utility vehicle stolen on Sunday after leaving it running.

Chris Penrod said someone sped away with his SUV down Skywae Drive after he left it unattended.

"I went outside this morning to start it up for a little bit to get it warmed up. And I was literally gone for about 20 seconds, and whoever was in it peeled off with the car," Penrod said.

Penrod said police told him someone used his SUV to hit a pickup truck and a car before they recovered it.

"My car got stolen got wrecked, and now we're trying to get back home," Penrod said.

Police said another auto thief who stole a running vehicle crashed it into an apartment building near Ironwood Drive and Karl Road.

A detective told 10TV News that police see a spike in auto thefts with the arrival of colder weather because some owners leave their cars running.
