Police Say Rape Suspect Hired Hit Man to Kill Accuser

Columbus police charged a man with trying to hire someone to kill the woman he's accused of raping.

Investigators charged Jamal Stafford, 22, Thursday night.
Officers said he was already in jail on rape and kidnapping charges.

Police said on Nov. 24, he held a 22-year-old woman captive in her home and repeatedly raped her over a 24 hour period.

While Stafford was behind bars, police said he was plotting to silence his accuser by hiring a hit man to kill her.

“His motivation was to have her silenced so that (with) no victim, it’s hard to prove the crime,” said Sgt. Terry McConnell with the Columbus Division of Police. “In this case, that silencing the witness was to kill her. That’s just not something that we’ll stand by and let happen.”

Officers said that when they caught wind of the plot, they made sure the alleged victim was hidden in a safe location.

Police intercepted the alleged plot, and charged Stafford with conspiracy to commit aggravated murder.
