Police are asking for help identifying a man accused of threatening and sexually assaulting a 15-year-old girl on Tuesday.

On Thursday afternoon, police released a photo and video of a man accused of following the girl, threatening her with a gun and sexually assaulting her.

The 15-year-old female student at Newark High School reported being abducted and sexually assaulted on her way to school Tuesday. The girl was walking westbound on the north side of Granville Street near the area of Pearl Street, when the man began to follow her shortly before 8 a.m.

The man is believed to have crossed the street from High to Pearl streets via the foot bridge over state Route 15.

“There is no picture of his face, but somebody who is intimate with him, a sibling, a cousin, a next-door-neighbor, even a parent, you can recognize some of his features, you can recognize his clothing, you can recognize the manner that he walks,” Newark police Sgt. Scott Snow said.

The man was described in his teens to mid 20s, between 5 feet 8 and 6 feet tall with a thin build, brown hair and brown eyes. He had close-cut facial hair with a prominent goatee and was wearing a brown zip-up hooded jacket or sweatshirt.

Anyone who was in the area at the time was asked to call police.

Anyone with information about the crime is asked to call Newark police at 740-349-1516 or Licking County Crime Stoppers 740-349-6888.
