Police Chase Ends In Crash In East Columbus

A police chase that started as a traffic stop in Whitehall ended in a crash in east Columbus early Friday morning.

Whitehall police said they attempted to stop a suspected drunken driver before 2:30 a.m. near Beechwood Avenue and East Main Street.

The driver refused to stop, and police followed the vehicle at a normal speed limit. Authorities said the driver picked up speed and at one point was travelling at 70 miles per hour.

The chase ended when the vehicle crashed into a utility pole at East 5th and Leonard avenues.

Driver Tyrone Green, 47, and passenger John Gilliam, 64, were transported to Grant Medical Center.

The extent of their injuries was unknown. Investigators said charges were pending.
