Police caught a suspected burglar Thursday morning accused of targeting an off-duty police officer.

According to police, the Whitehall officer was on special duty at Nationwide Children’s Hospital when the thief targeted his personal car around 10 p.m. Wednesday.

The crook made off with the officer’s gun, gun belt and badge. News of the theft spread fast and officers rushed to track down the stolen equipment.

The following investigation led police to Bobby Joe Summers’ vehicle along Beech and Forrest Drive. Police recovered the items stolen from the officer, as well as electronics from his vehicle.
