Franklin County authorities have arrested a man who allegedly came to central Ohio in an attempt to have sex with children.

Matthew Patnesky, 24, is charged with importuning, attempted rape and pandering sexually oriented material involving a minor.

According to police, Patnesky started an online chat in June with the screen name "downforanything."

Patnesky believed he was speaking to someone who was willing to offer up three children (ages 12, 8 and 5) for sex. Patnesky was actually having an online conversation with detectives.

Investigators said that Patnesky asked the detective if he "ever played with children" and said "I'd love to join you."

"It's appalling. It's sickening. It's hard for the average person on the street to even accept that there are chat rooms out there where parents want to trade their kids with other parents for sex," said Sheriff Zach Scott.

Investigators say Patnesky sent the investigator 56 images of child pornography and talked about engaging in fetish activity with the children, including bestiality.

The search warrant also reveals Patnesky began to communicate with who he thought was the 12-year-old girl, saying he wanted to "build a relationship" with her so "it wouldn't be awkward if he visited."

Investigators say on July 24, Patnesky made the three-hour trip from Lawrence, Penn., to Westerville, where investigators arrested him.

The case is far from isolated.

In June, the FBI and Franklin County Internet Crimes against Children Task Force arrested 49 people, executed 76 search warrants and filed felony charges against 11 travelers -- suspects who came from out of town for the purpose of having sex with children.

Patnesky is behind bars facing felony charges including attempted rape.
