Ohio State University Announces New Marching Band Leadership
On Monday, Ohio State University announced it will adopt an interim leadership plan to guide its marching band through the next school year.
According to a press release, Director of University Bands, Professor Russel Mikkelson, and Associate Director of University Bands Scott Jones have been appointed to provide operational leadership and oversight of the Ohio State Marching Band for the 2014-15 season.
Jones stepped away from the band's practice session Monday night to talk with 10TV.
"I think they're just eager to get started," Jones said of the band.
As part of the university's team approach to the interim leadership, Jones will oversee compliance, Title IX and student safety.
"We've all kind of approached this (transitional) team by looking first at what skills and gifts we individually bring to help our students through this really important season," Jones said.
OSU says Mikkelson will provide general oversight and direction of the Marching Band.
10TV spoke with Mikkelson in late July as he was preparing to lead the band's performance at Picnic with the Pops.
"Our students have come through this remarkably well, they are incredibly resilient, and so committed to this university and this band," Mikkelson said at the time.
In addition to the role adjustments for Mikkelson and Jones, OSU also announced that Lisa Galvin has been hired as associate director for the length of the marching band season.
The university added that Chris Hoch and Mike Smith will be retained as associate and assistant directors.
As the interim directors take over, Jones said the band will be focused on the music that made The Best Damn Band in The Land famous.
"My sense would be that an awful lot of them are eager to do what it is that we do--to be afforded the opportunity to just dive in and to represent this 136-year-old tradition and this university to the very fullest extent of our capabilities," Jones said.
The school adds that a national search for a new Ohio State University Marching Band Director will begin in the very near future.
