Ohio State Highway Patrol Targets Aggressive Drivers By Air

The Ohio State Highway Patrol’s aviation section will assist troopers on the road from the air by focusing on crash-causing violations that may be caused by distracted driving.

Those violations include aggressive driving, marked lanes violations, following too closely and driving left of center.

Trooper Jeremy Garner has some help on the ground this week.

OSP officials invited 10TV to fly along on a special patrol as they targeted aggressive drivers.

Lt. Mike Meyers has been a pilot with the highway patrol for 25 years -- long enough for him to know just what to look for on the ground.

“What we look for is aggressive speed, following too close, people passing on the berm,” Meyers said.

And from his birds-eye view, it's easy to see drivers breaking all of those laws.

It's a different perspective from above. Meyers says he can track the vehicle speeding or driving erratically.

“So from up there, we can watch the vehicle for a longer period of time,” Meyers said.

While flying the plane, Meyers uses a stop watch to clock the cars. Once he catches a speeder. He tells the ground crew who to pull over.

“1719, we’ve got a dark vehicle, either grey or black, going 84,” Meyers reports to Garner. “He's about ready to pass semi number three, left lane.”

The dual efforts on the ground and in the air work seamlessly to make sure aggressive drivers who can cause serious crashes are taken off the road.

“I worked in Licking County yesterday and I got some in the 90s some at 103. It's an everyday occurrence, so every day, we use these airplanes we're getting aggressive drivers,” Meyers said.

This targeted effort is something Meyers says he takes very seriously.

Because from his experience, he knows aggressive can mean deadly.

The six-State Trooper Project includes the Ohio State Highway Patrol, Kentucky State Police, Indiana State Police, Pennsylvania State Police and the West Virginia State Police.

The Ohio State Highway Patrol says it is a multi-state law enforcement partnership aimed at providing combined and coordinated law enforcement and security services in the areas of highway safety, criminal patrol and intelligence sharing.
