Ohio Senators Promote Help For Veterans, Convicts
Ohio's U.S. senators are promoting separate efforts to support often-difficult transitions, with one focused on veterans, the other for convicts.
Democratic Sen. Sherrod Brown of Cleveland plans a Thursday afternoon news conference at a Cincinnati jobs center to discuss legislation meant to help veterans of Iraq and Afghanistan use the skills and training they've acquired in military life to fit into the civilian job market. Brown says unemployment rates for recent veterans are higher than the national average.
Republican Sen. Rob Portman of the Cincinnati area will hold a roundtable discussion Thursday morning at the Freestore Foodbank, a downtown pantry that offers culinary training.
Portman is pushing for congressional reauthorization of the Second Chance Act, aimed at helping released convicts get jobs, education and other support to reduce repeat offenders.
