An Ohio lawmaker is using this weekend's 50th anniversary of Martin Luther King Jr.'s March on Washington to push the state to pass voting-rights guarantees.
State Rep. Alicia Reece was a scheduled speaker Saturday at the Lincoln Memorial. The event was organized by the Rev. Al Sharpton's National Action Network, where Reece is a national board member.
Reece, a Cincinnati Democrat, planned to call for a Voter Bill of Rights to be added to state constitutions in Ohio and in other states.
She says the goal of the effort is to guarantee certain protections to all voters, including access to the polls and freedom from intimidation.
The effort responds to a decision by the U.S. Supreme Court striking down a section of the 1965 Voting Rights Act.
