Ohio Governor Stays Execution Of Child Killer Who Wants To Donate Organs
Gov. John Kasich has stayed the execution of a child killer who says he wants to donate organs.
Ronald Phillips, 40, was already at the Lucasville prison for his planned execution Thursday morning.
Phillips was denied a last-minute request to donate his organs to his ailing mother and sisters.
Phillips said through his attorneys that the request was not a delay tactic, rather an attempt to make a final gesture for good.
Wednesday afternoon, Kasich released a statement saying he was rescheduling the execution until July 2.
He says the time will allow officials to assess the medical feasibility of organ donation.
“Ronald Phillips committed a heinous crime for which he will face the death penalty. I realize this is a bit of uncharted territory for Ohio, but if another life can be saved by his willingness to donate his organs and tissues then we should allow for that to happen," said Kasich's statement.
