Ohio Firefighters Gear Up For Wildfire Deployment
Nearly two dozen firefighters are getting ready to help battle wildfires out West.
ODNR's Division of Forestry is leading the fire crew. A total of 20 firefighters gathered at the State Fire Marshall Academy to prepare for their deployment to Utah.
The highly trained individuals are prepared for the worst. They're from all over Ohio and got the call from fire managers in Utah for assistance this afternoon.
Casey Burdick is the only female on the crew and has assisted in fighting western fires four times already. She says this trip is especially emotional with the loss of 19 hotshots in Arizona earlier this month.
"As soon as I heard about the firefighters in Arizona, my heart sank and I wanted to know as much as possible and also did a lottery search on how we can help protect ourselves from becoming that situation again," said Burdick.
She also says it's important to point out that in all the trips out West, no Ohio firefighter has been seriously injured.
The crew will be leaving for St. Louis Monday morning and then fly to Utah to assist in these fires.
