An officer fired his weapon after an incident on the southwest side Monday evening.

According to police, the shooting took place in the 1400 block of Stimmel Road shortly after 7 p.m.

The family of the victim told 10TV's Glenn McEntyre the man cut his own throat before police were called.

Police said the an officer followed a woman into the apartment and saw the man holding a knife.

Police said he ignored repeated commands by the officer to drop the knife at which point the officer fired once at the suspect.

The man was shot in the hip.

He was being treated at Mount Carmel West Hospital.

"Obviously there was some kind of threat that the officer felt in order for him to fire his weapon," said Columbus police sergeant Rich Weiner.

Police have not released the man's name because, at this point, he is not charged with anything.

Officers said his injuries were not life threatening.
