More Victims Of Minerva Park Rental Scam Come Forward
Police said that a man using an alias collected hundreds of dollars in deposits from victims, but never handed over the keys to a rental home.
Police said that they were getting closer to charging a man, who police said used the alias “Ron Hoover,” and promised a rental house to at least six families.
Investigators said that the man would collect money from people wanting to rent a property that he did not even own.
Jalisa Dear, who said that she fell victim to the man, said that she met the man who called himself Ron Hoover.
“I was trying to move for me and my family,” Dear said.
Robin Hernandez said that she filled out an application for an apartment.
“He said he was going to rent it to us for $750,” Hernandez said. “I would never have thought it,” Hernandez said.
All the alleged victims of Hoover said the same thing about the man.
Hernandez said that she and her husband looked at the home months ago, had filled out an application and even had moved from their old apartment.
The couple turned over $2,300 in deposits to the man.
She said that she kept getting excuse after excuse about why she and her husband could not move into their new house.
On Friday, Hernandez said that she saw the story on 10TV News about the home and the man called Hoover.
“It was the house that we looked at,” Hernandez said. “I see I’m not the only victim he got.”
Hernandez said that she and her family are now living at a hotel.
Dear said that she also saw the story and could not believe that she had been promised the very same house.
Dear said that she gave the man more than $700.
Now, Dear and her two young children are living at her mother’s house, with nowhere else to go.
“I’m thinking I’m going to be in a house, a safe household, and this man took advantage,” Dear said.
Anyone who thinks they might be a victim of the scam is asked to call Minerva Park police at 614-882-1223.
