Columbus Police and the Franklin County Sheriff's Office are investigating a deadly shooting in Columbus.

The shooting happened around 6:30 p.m. Saturday on Hilliard Rome Road near West Broad Street. Officers also investigated a related scene on Beacon Hill Road, where the shooting victim’s car was found.

Columbus Police tell 10TV the homeowner called 911, saying he shot another man in self-defense.

Police say the homeowner did show signs of physical injury.

Homicide detectives say the shooting victim, 50-year-old Duane E. Birtcher, attempted to drive himself to the hospital, but did not make it all the way.  Medics removed Birtcher from his car and took him to the hospital where he later died.

Detectives are trying to learn more about what led to the deadly shooting.

Neighbors tell 10TV they were frightened to hear something like this, so close to home.

“My son’s seven, so it’s scary. He’s afraid to stay here tonight because something could happen. But I did let him know that the police had taken away all the bad people and he should be fine,” said a neighbor.

Police say the two men have known each other for 5-6 years.  They say Birtcher went to the house uninvited on Saturday evening.

Officers say the shooter claimed Birtcher assaulted him before he fired the gun.

As of now, police say the homeowner who fired the gun is not being charged in the shooting.
