Man Dies After Working To Save 5-Year-Old From Icy Water Near Southeast Columbus Apartment
Dive crews pulled a man and a child from icy water near a southeast Columbus apartment complex on Thursday evening.
Rescuers said 30-year-old James Jenkins was driving by when he saw the child in the water and jumped in to help.
Dive crews pulled Jenkins from the water at about 6:30 p.m. He was pronounced dead at about 7 p.m. The 5-year-old child was pulled from the water shortly after.
The rescue took place at the Eastland On The Lakes Apartments, located near 4499 Lakeside South.
Fire crews said that four divers and two boats responded to the rescue. More than 50 firefighters also were on scene.
The Battalion Chief for Company 6 was the first to arrive, tied himself to a rope and entered the water to try to make a rescue.
Officials said that thee police officers and multiple civilians also tried to pull the two from the water.
Fire crews said that the pond was between 4 and 4 1/2 feet deep.
