Columbus Police charged a man Tuesday after they say he hit two pedestrians walking along a Northeast Columbus road.

The incident happened at Appian Way and Collier Drive shortly before 10:30 p.m. Sunday.

Police said 59-year-old Ana Maria Illescas-Gallegos was found dead at the scene.

The other victim, 41-year-old Verulo Valladares was taken to Grant Medical Center critical condition, but he has since been upgraded to stable.

Detectives said Illescas-Gallegos was on the road when a car crossed lanes and struck her. The driver, Scott Haslehurst, then struck Valladares, who was pushing his bike.

Police said Haslehurst originally left the scene, but then came back on his own.

Police believe alcohol may have been a factor in the crash.

Haslehurst is charged with aggravated vehicular homicide and aggravated vehicular assault. He is due in court Wednesday morning for arraignment.
