A man was arrested Tuesday in connection with a series of gropings that allegedly took place at two day cares.

Thomas E. Shifflet was arrested on one count of rape in connection with an investigation involving day care centers run by his daughters along state Route 13, 10TV's Kevin Landers reported.

Investigators said that they have reports that he groped four children who attended the home day cares. Deputies said further charges are expected for Shifflet, 75, in the near future.

The suspect's wife of 55 years told 10TV News on Tuesday that the allegations against her husband were untrue.

"My feeling is that I know he is innocent," Bev Shifflet said.  "First of all, I think if there was anything like that I would have detected it."

Investigators said Shifflet did not work at the day cares, and they said his daughters knew nothing of the allegations involving their businesses, Landers reported.

Bev Shifflet said she did not understand why parents never approached her daughters with the allegations.

"If he had touched them, why didn't they tell their parents?" she asked.  "They're all coming out like cockroaches. They've got him crucified."

Thomas Shifflet was expected to face a judge on Wednesday.
