A man was arrested Wednesday after he allegedly punched an off-duty officer at a gas station.

Authorities said that Danny Thompson smelled strongly of alcohol when the off-duty officer witnessed him staggering toward a vehicle with keys in hand.

According to the Athens County Sheriff's Office, the deputy claimed to have witnessed Thompson, 70, stumble several times as he approached Thompson and asked if he was OK.

When the deputy asked if someone could pick Thompson up from the gas station, Thompson allegedly told the deputy no. He apparently said that he'd be home soon and then stated that the deputy could not stop him from driving home.

Thompson told police that despite his age, he was still capable of harming the deputy.

Thompson allegedly began throwing punches, striking the deputy in the head. When he was advised that he was under arrest, Thompson continued to throw punches, the sheriff's department said.

When additional authorities arrived, Thompson kicked the off-duty deputy and responding deputy while handcuffed.

Thompson was transported to the Southeastern Ohio Regional Jail and charged with assault on a police officer, resisting arrest, and disorderly conduct by intoxication.
