Columbus City and AEP crews worked to restore power to nearly 900 customers, including three schools, Tuesday morning after a car crashed into a pole.

The impact of the crash brought live wires down at the intersection of Karl and Northridge roads. The crash sparked flames from the poles.

The intersection was shut down while crews made repairs at about 2:30 a.m. The road reopened shortly after 9:30 a.m.

“When I came out of the house, I was looking at the pole, then the sparks was right over here, and I didn't realize there was a car in my driveway,” said resident Ray Byer.

Byer said it is not the first time there’s been a crash in the area that has damaged the poles.

Police said that the driver and passenger inside the car ran from the scene. The driver was taken into custody a short time later.

Columbus City Schools officials said that Huy Elementary and Medina Middle School, located on Huy Road, were closed on Tuesday because of the power outage associated with the crash. Tree of Life's Northridge branch was closed on Tuesday.

“I thought it was in a dream. I didn't see any  cars, what the heck is happening here?” said one parent who showed up at the school parking lot.
