Insurance Claims Come Rolling In After Sandy
Nationwide Insurance is working to process nearly 2,000 claims for areas hit hard by Sandy.
Company officials said that they expect many more to roll in over the course of the next few days.
In Columbus, Nationwide is using aerial technology to help process claims.
Nationwide Vice President Peter Lore said that his company has a database full of aerial photos of its policy holders’ homes.
When customers call in and file a report of wind damage to their roofs, insurance reps no longer have to climb up onto houses to process the claims.
The aerial photos do not show actual damage, but agents use them for the critical task of mapping roof dimensions.
“It’s awesome,” Lore said. “I wish I had it when I was a rep.”
Nationwide officials said that homeowners also benefit from the technology – especially after big storms like Sandy.
Nationwide said that the technology allows claims to be processed faster, so adjusters can order roof repairs.
Officials said that even though it will be expensive to clean up Sandy, it will not affect policy holders’ premiums.
