A homeowner and three children were forced to escape their home in the middle of the night, after a fire broke out.

It happened around 11:30 p.m. Monday on a home in the 5000 block of Riverbirch Drive North near Tamarack Boulevard in north Columbus.

When firefighters arrived, they saw the family standing on the front lawn.  Flames were coming out of the doors and a back window.  Firefighters were able to quickly put the fire out.

Investigators believe an electric space heater in the basement started the fire.

The Red Cross came to the home to help, but the family has decided to stay with relatives.
