Holiday Season Marks Push For Drunken-Driving Awareness

For the 26th year in a row, Mothers Against Drunk Driving is trying to prevent people from driving under the influence of alcohol.

The holiday season marks more drivers on the road, creating more opportunities for danger.

Tuesday marks the start of the 26th annual Mother Against Drunk Driving “Tie One On For Safety” campaign.

Drivers are encouraged to tie red ribbons on to their cars as a pledge to drive safely and wear seatbelts.

Bob Kent was one of the speakers at Tuesday’s launch.

He spoke of how drunken driving affects everyone and that the pain for family and friends never stops. His son Brandon and two friends were killed on Christmas morning eight years ago by a drunken-driver heading the wrong way in traffic.

“My wife even now sits up and just sobs in the middle of the night, Kent said. “I’ve been brought up, I’m the father, I’m the husband. I fix things. I can’t fix it, man. I can’t fix it.”

In 2011, drunken-driving caused more than 400 deaths in Ohio.

Twenty-seven of the fatalities occurred between Thanksgiving and Christmas.
