Hilliard Ministry Provides Free Lunches For Children During Summer

A Hilliard group is working to provide free lunches to children during the summer months.

The group, called Serving Our Neighbors Ministries, provides 300 free lunches for kids in Hilliard in addition to a summer day camp program.

The government fund that covers the school lunch program is what pays for the lunches.

Kim Emch, executive director of the group, said that a third free lunch site has been added for July at the request of two Hilliard school principals.

Emch said the kids who come to eat share with them what it is like to go hungry.

“They tell us stories about having headaches because they haven’t eaten. They tell us stories about skipping meals,” Emch said. “They tell us stories about eating rice for several days until parents get paid. So we know hunger is a very real issue.”

Emch said that more than 3,700 children in the Hilliard School District received free or reduced lunches this past school year.
