A Hilliard man, who police say confessed to hitting a woman walking across the street then fleeing the scene, turned himself in to police.

Police say Brian Gease, 26, was behind the wheel Sunday morning when he struck 32-year old Beth Shapiro then dragged her body down a portion of Neil Avenue.

One caller to 911 described to police what he saw.

“We have a person hit by a motor vehicle who sped off.  It did not have its lights on. It went straight through the light on south broad on Neil Avenue. He hit her going at least 45 miles per hour, way over the speed limit,” the man said to the police dispatcher.

Friends say Shapiro worked for the Jewish Federation of Columbus as a volunteer for the past 10 years.

Gease is charged with a felony for failure to stop at the scene of an accident.

Police say tips from the public led them to his car. He told police he turned himself in when he learned his car was in their possession.

A check of his records shows in 2006 he pleaded guilty to Operating a Vehicle while Intoxicated.

Gease is currently in the Franklin County Jail.
