Halftime Breakdown: Central Florida vs. Ohio State
Ohio State took a 17-10 lead over Central Florida with just 15 seconds left in the first half. The Buckeyes, while far from impressive, have outgained the Knights 245-120 in the first 30 minutes.
UCF brought in a strong rushing attack, but have been out-gained on the ground 189-70 in the first half.
The Bucks have been in control mostly and never trailed. But here we are just a one score game.
The OSU offense has clicked at times, but there have been some mistakes. Braxton Miller has struggled at times with the read option, the Buckeyes failed to pick up a first down on a fourth and one from midfield, and Zach Boren fumbled…also at midfield.
Miller has been the biggest weapon, though. After carrying 17 times last week against Miami—a number Urban Meyer though was too high—he’s already toted it 14 times today for an even 100 yards with two touchdowns. Passing he’s 8 of 10, but for only 56 yards.
Miller has had two pretty runs; the first on the game’s opening drive. His 37-yard score opened the scoring at 7-0. He also had a crucial 24 yard pick up on third and 16 that led to his second touchdown.
Of concern is the health of running back Carlos Hyde. He left the sideline late in the second quarter with a large bag of ice on his knee. His status for the rest of the game is uncertain. Freshman Bri’onte Dunn has had a couple impressive runs, but missed some blocking assignments as well.
Really, Central Florida only put together one solid drive, thanks to a 20-yard pass play from Brett Bortles to Storm Johnson, followed by a 48-yard run from Johnson. The Knights field goal came after stopping the Buckeyes on fourth down, to get the ball at the OSU 47.
Bortles has been solid, completing 8 of 11 passes for 50 yards with a touchdown and an interception. Johnson has 63 yards on just six carries.
Defensively, Ohio State hasn’t played its best, either. The Buckeyes have several missed tackles, and poor pursuit angles.
One player on defense standing out is safety Orhian Johnson. He has two tackles, a pass break-up on third down, and he tipped the pass that Travis Howard intercepted. Howard now has three picks on the season.
