Police were looking for a shooter who opened fire on a man in his car.

The shooting happened shortly before midnight Wednesday near Cleveland and Genessee Avenues in northeast Columbus.

Police said 37-year-old Brandon Smith was driving eastbound on Genessee Avenue when a man walked up to his vehicle armed with a gun, and told him not to move.

Smith said he stepped on the gas to get away, and heard about six gunshots. He was shot twice in the shoulder and once in the stomach.

The bullets also smashed out the car windows. His dog in the passenger seat wasn't hurt.

Smith stopped in a Kroger parking lot in the 3300 block of Cleveland Avenue, and that's where police and medics found him.

Smith was taken to the hospital in critical condition, but he was expected to survive.

Police were searching the area for witnesses and working to piece together a description of the shooter.
