The Groveport Police Department said its chief recently served a three-day working suspension after accidentally discharging his firearm.

A department spokesperson said Chief Ralph Portier was removing his police-issued Glock Model 23 firearm from his duty holster to replace it with a training weapon when his firearm discharged. The incident happened on May 14.

The bullet entered the rear window of a parked unoccupied Toyota 4Runner on the parking lot of Stewart Auto Group at 4355 Williams Road. The bullet exited the vehicle and struck a light pole.

There were no injuries.

An internal investigation was conducted and the findings turned over to the mayor, who levied the three-day working suspension.
