It's only a few streets long, but police said that an area of Bexley sees heavy turnover with tenants and criminals.

One development company hopes a big investment in the areas of Mayfield Place and Ferndale Place, in South Bexley, could lead to big changes.

It is a small section of town where residents say a few “bad apples” can give the whole area a bad name.

Rodney Caldwell said that after 13 years living on Mayfield Place, he is glad to see changes coming to the neighborhood.

“Couples get into arguments, sometimes someone comes in with a gun, might shoot it off, something like that,” Caldwell said.

The Kassel Equity Group has set sights on the area in an effort to inspire a turnaround by purchasing two apartment buildings.

“We actively got rid of some tenants who we knew were doing illegal activities and that alone has helped,” Kassel Equity Group CFO Brian Throckmorton said.

Throckmorton said that despite police counting 300 calls to the area in the past 12 months, his development company saw potential and invested $1 million, inspiring new hope for the neighborhood.

“I think it’s fantastic,” Caldwell said. “Anything to upgrade the community is a helpful thing.”

Upgrades include new building security cameras, new appliances, granite countertops and hardwood floors.

Throckmorton said that a new playground could also be in the works.
