Gee Comments On Tressel Resignation, Ongoing Football Probe

Ohio State University president Gordon Gee said on Wednesday that Jim Tressel did the right thing by offering his resignation earlier this week.

Gee made the comments while leaving his office for the day, 10TV's Kevin Landers reported.

"(Tressel) has always been consistent about the fact that he will do what is in the best interest of the university," Gee said.  "I think the resignation was precisely that, and I think he did the right thing."

Gee said he was concerned about the possibility of more allegations concerning the football program surfacing.

"I think we're always concerned about that," he said.

"(The university) is really on a roll, and then there's football.  We have some issues there and we are going to solve those issues and move on."

Earlier in the day, Gee told reporters gathered at a student-sponsored event that he did not believe that athletic director Gene Smith's job was in jeopardy.

"Gene Smith's job is safe," Gee said.

When asked about his own job, Gee told reporters at the Wexner Center that the Board of Trustees was responsible for hiring or firing him, the Columbus Dispatch reported.

In an editorial published on Wednesday in the USA Today, Gee acknowledged problems within the football program, but he also wrote that the team ranked first in academic performance among the nation's top 25 teams.

Gee ended his editorial by saying the problems would be corrected, and the university's larger purpose of teaching, research and service would endure.
