Funeral Home Working To Stop Teens From Texting While Driving

A new initiative by the National Funeral Directors Association is designed to prevent districted driving, CrimeTracker 10’s Jeff Hogan reported Thursday.

Haller Funeral Home in Chillicothe is taking part in the “In The Blink Of An Eye” program.

The program, which officially launched last week, is designed to show the effects of distracted driving.

“You reach over to change the radio station, you pick up your cell phone to make a call or you text. It happens way too fast,” said Michael Haller of Haller Funeral Home.

Ross County does not budget transportation for its coroner to get to accident sites. Haller Funeral Home funds transportation as a community service, Haller said.

Haller said that he gets to see the deadly crashes up close, Hogan reported.

“When you go out on the scene, you see the destruction and the loss of life, and then the next day, you end up meeting with the family, and it becomes real,” Haller said.

Ross County officials said that 11 people have died along county roads so far this year. The number is three times the number of deadly crashes in 2011.
