Franklin County Prosecutor Ron O’Brien is using Facebook to keep Clintonville residents informed about crime in their neighborhood.
O’Brien also said that Facebook and other forms of social media have even helped solve certain crimes in the past.

“We use it to convey information to citizens (and in some cases) to help us and the police who are responding to problems,” O’Brien said.

O’Brien’s online activity became noticeable when he posted detailed case information, including names of those charged, in the “Clintonville Crime & Blockwatch Monitor” Facebook group.

The group is a private, closed online community intended to inform Clintonville residents about crimes in their neighborhood.

O’Brien said the group also allows residents “to communicate better amongst themselves” regarding the problems.

Maria Kozelek, a Clintonville resident, started the group a few years ago when she said she noticed the rising number of small crimes around her.
Kozelek called it a “nice tool” that helps her and her neighbors keep an eye on the community.

The group has over 2,000 members.
