The man who founded Schmidt's Restaurant & Sausage Haus has died.

George F. Schmidt was surrounded by family when he passed away Monday. He was 90 years old.

Schmidt started the restaurant in 1967, and it became a German Village landmark. Schmidt's was featured on Man v. Food and the Food Network's Best of Ohio.

The business started as a meatpacking house, and the family then opened a stand at the Ohio State Fair.

Starting on his 10th birthday and every year since, Schmidt was serenaded by the Ohio State Fair marching band.

Schmidt is also credited with starting German Village Oktoberfest.

His family said funeral arrangements are pending.
