Former Ohio AG, FreedomOhio To Announce Ballot Issue To Allow Same-Sex Marriage
Former Ohio Attorney General Jim Petro plans to announce a 2014 ballot initiative that would allow same-sex couples to receive marriage licenses and to have the same legal rights as heterosexual couples.
A spokesman for Freedom Ohio told 10TV News on Friday that the ballot initiative, which is slated for November 2014, has been approved by the Ohio Ballot Board and the Ohio Attorney General’s Office.
The initiative contains two issues.
The first would allow same-sex couples to obtain marriage licenses. They would also be allowed to have the same legal rights as heterosexual couples.
The second issue would allow religious institutions to continue to choose if they would perform the marriages.
The spokesman said that religious groups have backed the initiative. He was not immediately able to name those groups.
Petro and officials from Freedom Ohio plan to announce the initiative at 10:30 a.m. on Monday at the Sheraton Columbus Hotel in Downtown Columbus.
