Fire crews worked to keep flames from a vacant south Columbus warehouse from spreading early Monday.

Flames broke out at the building, located in the 700 block of South Front Street., near Greenlawn Avenue, shortly before 4 a.m.

Firefighters said it was an intense blaze with flames coming from the second floor and no way to get inside.

"We had holes on the exterior of the building, very dangerous for firefighters," said Battalion Chief Bill Bishop.

Bishop said the firefighters had to isolate the area and put up a collapse zone.

It took firefighters more than two hours to contain the fire in the building.

The cause of the fire was not immediately known. Investigators said it's possible that squatters may have been inside, which is why they are calling the fire suspicious.
