Firefighters say a gas leak at an apartment complex was started by a copper theft.

Columbus Police said a resident at the Trinity Square Apartments on Parkville Court went to the laundry room to grab clothes when they noticed the damage early monday morning.

Officers say the thief pulled a washer and dryer out of the wall to get to the copper. That's what started the gas leak.

Police are still searching for the suspect, who they say also stole laundry from a dryer.

Firefighters were quickly able to put the leak under control.
