Fire Under Investigation After It Causes Prison Lockdown
A fire is under investigation after it caused a prison to go into lockdown Saturday night.
It happened at the Southeastern Correctional Institution in Lancaster around 7:25 p.m.
A prison spokesperson said inmates and staff, who were outside in the prison's recreation area, noticed smoke coming from the laundry building.
Firefighters believe an electrical problem caused the fire in the laundry room. No one was inside at the time since the building is non-operational on the weekends.
Inmates were sent back to their living quarters as a precaution.
An investigator with the state fire marshal's office has been called out to determine the cause.
No one was hurt.
It’s unknown how much damage the fire caused or how it may impact future operations.
