Firefighters were investigating what sparked a fire that destroyed a daycare business and four apartments late Friday night.

The fire started shortly before midnight in the 900 block of East Whittier Street near Ohio Avenue in southeast Columbus.

Columbus Firefighters told 10TV that the flames were burning through the roof and basement when they arrived on scene.

Firefighters say three of the four apartments on the second floor were vacant.  The people living in the fourth apartment were not home at the time.

The first floor housed Maw Maw’s Learning Center.  The daycare owner spoke with 10TV.

"It’s really sad. It’s sad.  I worked really hard to get this started. For it to just get cut short like that ...I don't understand how this happened. It was just licensed in November of 2013 and now it’s just stopped,” Pamala Poindexter said.  “I’m glad there weren't any kids here. So thank god for that. And everybody is safe.”

The cause of the fire was under investigation.
